Michael Fiers (Saratoga ’07-’08), making his Major League Baseball spring training debut for the Milwaukee Brewers, struck out the side on Monday afternoon (Mar. 15) in a game with the Cleveland Indians. Fiers began spring training in Milwaukee’s minor league camp however he was added to the Brewers spring training roster prior to the game with Cleveland.

While the collegiate baseball season is well underway at all levels from NCAA Division I to NJCAA Division III, the New York Collegiate Baseball League would like to recognize nine former players and two future players who were named to 2010 preseason All-America teams.

 

College of Charleston senior Joey Bergman (Bennington ’08), University of Kentucky junior Chris Bisson (Amsterdam ’08) and ManhattanCollege senior Kevin Nieto (Amsterdam ’07) received recognition at the Division I level from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA), Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball News and Ping! Baseball.

 

The NCBWA honored DowlingCollege junior Gabriel Duran (Saratoga ’09), West ChesterUniversity senior Nick Spisak (Geneva ’07), ShippensburgUniversity sophomore Cody Kulp (Amsterdam ’10) and SouthwestMinnesotaStateUniversity seniors Adam Kinney (Hornell ’08) and Adam Schrader (Hornell ’08) in Division II.

In the over 30-year history of the New York Collegiate Baseball League, 30 former players have gone on to Major League Baseball. Of those 30 players, 11 are currently participating in Major League Spring Training camps in Florida and Arizona. Additionally, three recent NYCBL alums are participating in Major League camps in hopes of making it up to the big leagues.  

 

In the American League, Dallas Braden (Hornell ’03) returns to the mound for the Oakland Athletics after missing the later half of the 2009 season due to injury. Braden was the opening day starter for the A’s last year and he put up career numbers in wins (eight), ERA (3.89), innings pitched (136.2) and strikeouts (81). Braden isn’t the only former Dodger in Oakland, Rajai Davis (Hornell ’00) enjoyed a breakout 2009 for the Green and Gold. Davis played in a personal best 125 games, batted .305, drove in 48 runs and swiped 41 bases. He was an everyday outfielder for the A’s in the second half of the season.
